> Why should you join the NCT?
NCT member,
Briony Askew and mum to Hattie, 1, explains why she took the plunge to join the
NCT branch and why she hasn’t looked back…
“We were
invited to join the NCT when we signed up to do our antenatal classes in
Towcester, but I decided to wait and see before committing as I wasn't really
sure 'what the point' of joining the NCT might be. Classes duly completed and
with baby imminent, I found I had millions of things to do, including decorating
the nursery the week before she was born, so it went to the bottom of the pile.
Once our daughter had safely arrived I started to think about what the classes
had meant to me, and wondered what the local group might have to offer. With the
words 'you get into the Nearly New Sale early' ringing in my ears I signed us up
for a year.
“Through the NCT I was able to take part in really
comprehensive antenatal classes; through the NCT I was lucky enough to meet a
fantastic group of people who had their babies at the same time and who have
become amazing friends; through the NCT Nearly New Sales I have bought bargain
clothes, toys and baby stuff; through the NCT I've made friends with other mums
locally; through the NCT I have access to parenting information and support
24:7. Shall I go on?! To take part in all of this and more I didn't actually
need to be a member, but if no-one joined, funds would dry up and the NCT would
disappear, taking all of the above and so much more with it.
“I'm now in
my second year of membership and recently joined the Towcester branch committee.
It was pretty daunting turning up at my first meeting as it was in the middle of
a Nearly New Sale prep meeting. It was chaos! I started to wonder what I'd let
myself in for but after the sale and with a social evening under my belt, I
thought I may be able to do something to support the work of the NCT locally, as
it really has played a larger role than I could have imagined during my first
year as a parent. No-one has foisted jobs on me (but I'm sure there are times
they would have liked to!) and it really is true that every little helps. As
it’s run by other busy mums everyone understands how difficult it can be to
juggle baby stuff and everything else.
“So if you were thinking of
joining the NCT but haven't got round to it maybe think about whether or not the
NCT has done anything for you on your journey through early parenthood.
Personally I feel I've got good value for my money and they have different rates
and concessions available for different family circumstances too. As for joining
the committee, well so far it’s been really nice to get to know other members
better, do my little bit to help and I've not regretted it…
yet!”
